Antananarivo, Madagascar Madagascar

Antananarivo, also known as Tana, is the capital of Madagascar. Located in the country’s central highlands, Tana is a charmingly chaotic yet welcoming city, lively and full of energy. The city features unusual French- and Asian-inspired architecture, along with winding cobblestone streets and staircases that create a somewhat medieval feel. Main attractions include the colorful daily flower market on the edge of Lake Anosy and the botanical and zoological gardens, where you can see the egg skeleton of the extinct aepyornis, or elephant bird. Rova, the Queen’s Palace, stands on the highest hill and offers excellent panoramic views of the city. Antananarivo is a vivid city set in a picturesque landscape with a lovely atmosphere. It is an ideal introduction to this remarkable country.
